This volume contains a list of convert baptisms that took place during fourteen powerful years, from the time the Prophet Joseph Smith helped restore the Savior’s true Church in 1820, until his murder in 1844.

During those years, Joseph Smith gathered between 45,000 and 50,000 followers, in an age without radio, televison and the internet, and with no inherited wealth or grand university education, or political or military renown, as other successful men of early America like Washington, Jefferson and Adams.  Ministers in the 1800’s felt fortunate if they could build a following of 100-200 members, perhaps 300 if they lived in a very large city like Boston, Philadelphia or New York City. But for an unknown boy in “Backwash” New York to gather such large numbers in unknown rural locations like Fayette, Kirtland, Independence, Far West and Nauvoo, was completely unheard of.

It’s obvious that Heavenly Father and the Savior Jesus Christ were in charge of this momentous event, the restoration of their true Church, and that the Holy Ghost was assisting, along with hundreds of dedicated and powerful early leaders, including Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, David W. Patten, and the Pratt brothers. THE TRUTH IS, JOSEPH SMITH HAD A LOT OF HELP DOING SOMETHING IN THE 1800’S THAT NO MINISTER OF ANY FAITH COULD EVER ACCOMPLISH. This final dispensation was a glorious explosion of righteous converts who gathered to Zion and followed a young prophet in faith.

Wayne Lewis has spent much of the last 30 years researching and assembling this list of those who joined the Church during Joseph Smith’s lifetime as an attempt to honor him. Mr. Lewis has spent the last three years refining the data to make it as reliable as possible.

Wayne J. Lewis

Wayne J. Lewis was born in Mesa, Arizona. He served a mission in Virginia and North Carolina. He received his BA in political science in 1969 and his master’s degree in history in 1981, both at Brigham Young University. He taught seminary in Mesa and Snowflake, Arizona, and also taught classes in the College of Religion Education at BYU. His master’s thesis identified 6,700 names of Latter-day Saints who lived in the state of Missouri during the 1830s and also identified the property that many of these early Saints owned there. He also pursued work toward a PhD in the College of Family Sciences.

He worked for the Presiding Bishopric Office of the LDS Church and was assigned to the LDS Philanthropies for twenty years to assist in financing various projects of the Church and BYU. He assisted in some of the priority needs with the College of Religion, BYU Sports, and Ezra Taft Benson Agricultural Institute, and served as assistant dean in the College of Biology and Agriculture at BYU.

Wayne and his wife, Maren Barraclough, were married in the Mesa Arizona Temple and have twelve children, fifty grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He has served as a bishop and has served in numerous other positions in the Church.

Wayne has collected books written about Joseph Smith for over forty-five years and has over five hundred books about the Prophet Joseph Smith in his personal library.

In 2009, Wayne compiled the first complete bibliography of the Prophet Joseph Smith. In 2010, he printed a second edition entitled Joseph Smith Bibliography, Joseph Smith A–Z Volume 1, Reference Encyclopedia.

This Tribute List has over 17,000 names of baptized members during Joseph Smith’s lifetime gleaned from journals, church documents, and records.
This list attempts to numerate their tribute to the Prophet Joseph Smith.
Some sources state that there were 45,000 – 50,000 members by Joseph Smith’s death.

A TRIBUTE TO THE PROPHET JOSEPH SMITH

In a time when most ministers felt lucky to attract a following of 100-200 members, historical records indicate that 45,000 to 50,000 people followed Joseph Smith and joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during his lifetime. How did this happen? Long before radio, television and the internet ministers and preachers had only their charisma and ability to gather and hold a crowd to build their ministries. Joseph Smith had more–his was an undertaking commissioned by God Himself! God, angels, and hundreds of good men and women helped Joseph do something in the 1800’s that no minister of any faith could ever accomplish alone! This final dispensation was a glorious explosion of righteous converts who gathered to Zion and followed a young prophet in faith.

Our database of over 17,000 names was compiled to honor Joseph Smith. While not a complete listing of baptisms (we know there were many converts who joined the church in Europe and other countries who are not listed here, as well as many in America who’s information has not been found), it is a significant first effort. It is hoped that the information here may be of  some value, and that it may inspire additional research.

Data Disclaimer:
The compiler has made every effort to include as much information as was locatable. When an exact date was not known, a best guess was made and the name included in the database, in hopes that others who access this information may be able to provide additional details. Furthermore, the data has undergone several enumerations in order to publish it on the web in a usable format. Although every attempt has been made to keep information intact, some data may have been lost.
